Which worksheet should I print?

Use the step sheets when the child is learning to build a drawing from shapes, the grid and tracing sheets when the problem is proportion, symmetry for mirroring, and shading or perspective once the outline is no longer the difficulty. Draw and write paper is for pairing a picture with a sentence.

How to draw worksheets How to draw worksheets A drawing tutorial on a screen is not much use at a desk. These are the same step drawings laid out as a worksheet: the steps run along the top and the rest of the page is blank, so the child copies them with a pencil instead of watching. 35 printable sheets Grid drawing worksheets Grid drawing worksheets Grid drawing teaches one idea: stop drawing the whole animal and draw only what is inside one square. Each sheet puts a small gridded picture at the top and a bigger empty grid below it, so the copy comes out larger than the original. 35 printable sheets Drawing practice sheets Drawing practice sheets Tracing is the step between copying and drawing. The left half of each sheet carries the finished drawing printed very faintly, light enough to trace over with a pencil. The sheets fall into three groups. Five formats use the 35 drawings from the site, from a bear and a cat to a skeleton, a pickup truck and the word HI in bubble letters. Three are skill drills with no subject at all. The last group is for the days when the question is what to draw, not how.

For a child who is new to drawing, start with the step sheets. The strip at the top shows how the drawing grows from two light shapes, and two empty boxes underneath leave room for two tries. Once the shapes are familiar, the trace and draw sheets move the help from the top of the page to under the pencil, and the finish the drawing sheets take half of it away.

Grid and symmetry sheets suit children who can already draw a shape but get the sizes wrong. A grid makes them look at one square at a time; the mirror line makes them compare left and right. Only 16 of the 35 drawings are offered as symmetry sheets, because a fox seen from the side has no correct mirror image.

The shading, perspective and draw and write sheets are single pages that work for any age from about seven up. Teachers covering a lesson can go to the art sub plans, which pair these sheets with timings and instructions a substitute can read out.

All sheets are US Letter line art on a white page, with the title and instructions printed at the top. They also print on A4 if you choose fit to page.
